Founder of Thebes
Cadmus is a Phoenician prince sent out to find his abducted sister Europa and told, by the oracle at Delphi, to give up the search and follow a cow instead — building a city wherever it lies down. He kills the dragon guarding the spring at that site, sows its teeth on Athena's instruction, and watches armed men, the Spartoi, grow from the furrows to become Thebes's first noble families.
