Ferryman of the Dead
Charon is the ferryman who carries the dead across the waters of the underworld. Greek tragedy already knows him as an old boatman waiting at death's edge; Aristophanes later puts him onstage, shouting for passengers while Dionysus discovers that even a journey to Hades comes with a fare.
