Apollo's Beloved
Hyacinthus is a beautiful Spartan youth beloved by Apollo, who teaches him athletics and music and spends every possible hour in his company. In Ovid's telling, the two are simply playing discus together when Apollo's throw rebounds off the hard ground at an unlucky angle and strikes Hyacinthus in the head, killing him by accident.
