The Queen Who Boasted Once
Niobe is queen of Thebes, proud of her children — Homer counts twelve, six sons and six daughters; most later sources, including Apollodorus and Ovid, raise it to fourteen — and unwise enough to say publicly that this makes her a better mother than Leto, who has only two. The insult reaches Apollo and Artemis directly, and they answer it as a family.
