Penelope is Odysseus's wife, left to manage Ithaca and raise their son Telemachus through twenty years of his absence, first at war, then lost on his long journey home. Rather than remarry as circumstances press her to, she delays the decision for years by weaving a burial shroud during the day and secretly undoing it each night.
