The King Who Refused to Believe
Pentheus is king of Thebes and a cousin of Dionysus through his mother Agave, Semele's sister. When Dionysus arrives in Thebes demanding recognition as a god, Pentheus refuses to believe the claim and tries to suppress the ecstatic worship spreading through the city.
