The Liar Left Behind on Purpose
Sinon is a Greek soldier, left behind near the abandoned camp when the fleet appears to sail for home, playing the part of a man his own side has betrayed and left to Trojan mercy. Homer's Odyssey already knows the trick of the horse but never names him; the earliest surviving mention of Sinon by name is in the Little Iliad, part of the Epic Cycle known today only through summary and fragments. Virgil's Aeneid, centuries later, is where his speech and his lie survive in full.
