The Child of the Earth
Erichthonius is an earth-born child whose strange origin ties Athena, Hephaestus, and Gaia to the Athenian royal line. In the best-known account, Hephaestus attempts to force himself on Athena; she escapes, his seed falls to the earth, and Gaia bears the child.
