Desire, the Eldest
In the oldest tradition, Eros is not Aphrodite's mischievous son but one of the first four beings in existence, born directly alongside Chaos, Gaia, and Tartarus. He is the force that lets anything reach toward anything else: without desire, Hesiod implies, nothing that follows could ever combine or reproduce.
