Hermes is Zeus's son by the nymph Maia, born in a cave on Mount Cyllene and remarkably precocious even by divine standards: within a single day of his birth he invents the lyre from a tortoise shell and steals Apollo's cattle, driving them backward so their tracks point the wrong way.
