Thetis is a Nereid, daughter of Nereus, whose potential is dangerous enough that both Zeus and Poseidon desire her until a prophecy warns that her son will surpass his father. Rather than risk it, the gods marry her instead to the mortal Peleus, ensuring her child cannot threaten Olympus itself.
