Dione

The Divine

Dione is a shadowy figure in most sources, an Oceanid in Hesiod's catalogue, one nymph among three thousand. But Homer gives her a role no genealogy can ignore: in the Iliad, she is Aphrodite's mother, comforting her wounded daughter with the plain observation that any god who meddles in mortal wars should expect to bleed.
