Queen of Thebes, Twice Over
Jocasta is queen of Thebes, first as Laius's wife and, after his death and Oedipus's unwitting arrival, as his as well. She has no part in the exposure of her infant son and believes him dead for years, making her remarriage to the stranger who solves the Sphinx's riddle an accident of timing rather than any deliberate deception on her part.
