Laius is king of Thebes, descended from Cadmus, and husband to Jocasta. Warned by an oracle that any son of his will kill him, he has the infant Oedipus's ankles pierced and given to a herdsman to be left exposed on Mount Cithaeron — a precaution that only delays the prophecy rather than prevents it.
