The Sphinx

The Riddler of Thebes

The Sphinx, called Phix in Hesiod, is a monster tied specifically to Thebes, where she poses a single riddle to travelers and kills anyone who fails to answer it. Her parentage is genuinely uncertain in the sources themselves: Hesiod's Greek is ambiguous about whether Orthrus fathered her with Echidna or with Chimera.
