Agamemnon leads the combined Greek forces against Troy, a position of enormous authority that he wields, at the poem's opening, with more pride than wisdom. His refusal to release the captive Chryseis brings plague on his own army, and his decision to take Briseis from Achilles instead nearly tears the Achaean coalition apart before the fighting is even properly underway.
