The Sea-Monster
Ceto is a daughter of Pontus and Gaia whose name is so closely tied to monstrousness that it becomes the ordinary Greek word for sea-monster, kētos. With her brother and consort Phorcys, she bears the Gorgons, Echidna, and Ladon, a family whose descendants populate an enormous share of Greek myth's more dangerous corners.
