Phorcys is an old sea god, son of Pontus and Gaia, who together with his sister and consort Ceto fathers an extraordinary line of monsters: the Gorgons, Echidna, and Ladon among them. Almost every dangerous creature encountered by later heroes traces back, one way or another, to this single couple.
